Hidden at the edges of the palm swamp of Lake Sandoval is a phenomenon
that rivals that of the clay colpas of the Tambopata River. Hundreds
of Red-bellied macaw, as well as White-bellied parrot, Red-shouldered
macaws and Blue-and-gold macaws, gather to eat dead palms. Like
the soil of the claylicks, this palm is also high in sodium. Here
all we see are the tails as the macaws tear away at the tasty wood.
